Umoe postpones Miramichi solar project
Umoe has decided to postpone construction of its project for making polysilicon in Miramichi, New Brunswick. Capital costs have become too high in a world with an appreciating Canadian dollar, international finance crises, and increased uncertainty on potential international sales of renewable energy, particularly solar. Umoe will continue developing the site in Miramichi, as well as its forestry and lumber activities in New Brunswick. ….

Umoe Solar is sponsoring a first ever fireworks display at the Miramichi Rotary Pond Hockey Tournament, organized by Newcastle Rotary Club this year. Over 103 teams of 4 have signed up to participate in this year’s Tournament, setting record numbers for participation.

ACOA has announced that Umoe Solar will receive $3 million over four years through the Atlantic Innovation Fund. This funding will be used by the company’s R&D team in Fredericton to find a cheaper way to produce silicon to use in solar panels, providing an alternative source of clean, renewable energy.

New Brunswick Premier visits Umoe Solar NB Inc.
Premier Shawn Graham, Business Minister Victor Boudreau and a delegation from the government of New Brunswick visited the Umoe Solar site in Miramichi. Øystein Øyehaug, CEO Umoe Solar, explained the plans for the polysilicon plant and the progress in the demolition process to the representatives.

Umoe Solar has begun the demolition process and the preparations for construction in 2010. The demolition process will last approximately 2 years. Umoe Solar has contracted Delway Enterprises Ltd. for the demolition.

Umoe Solar finalized its site selection process and purchased a large area adjacent to the Miramichi River in Miramichi - the largest city in northern New Brunswick, Canada. Today's local economy is primarily focused on forestry, mining and fishing. Until recently, UPM-Kymmene had been a major employer in the area with extensive paper and forestry activities.
